  • Develop, issue, and communicate S&H Vision Statement and S&H Policy Statement.
  • Communicate Vision and Policy Statements to all company and subcontractor employees; incorporate into new employee and/or subcontractor orientation.

  • Policy letters are readily available in written form and are widely distributed to all employees
  • Letters generally should NOT exceed one page in length
  • Include specific elements and language, such as A clear, straightforward statement that goes beyond compliance and addresses behavior and culture of the organization.
  • A personal commitment by senior-level management.
  • A clear acknowledgment that each employee has the ultimate responsibility for his or her personal health and safety.
  • A statement requiring employees to hold themselves personally accountable for the results of the program.
  • Guidance offered to frontline managers.
  • A demand for accountability.
  • Assignment of responsibility to specific individuals in the firm (in some cases)
  • A review of the rights, duties, and mutual responsibilities of co-workers for their safety and that of third parties, including owner representatives and the general public.
  • Terms like “intense management participation” or similar wording.
  • A statement that employees are individually active and aggressive in accepting responsibility for leadership in the area of safety and health, making a conscious choice not to delegate this authority to others.
